The Introduction of the SANFL Women’s Competition

The SANFL Women’s league was launched in February 2017 with four clubs. Norwood was the inaugural premier.

In 2018 two new clubs were South Adelaide and Sturt.

In 2019 Two More Clubs Joined the Womens Competition. Woodville West Torrens and Central District were added to the competition.

The First Club Premierships

Norwood won the inaugural grand final in 2017. In its entry season to the SANFL Women’s competition in 2018 South Adelaide won the premiership. In 2020 North Adelaide won its first premiership in the SANFL Women’s competition. In 2021 Glenelg won its first premiership in the SANFL Women’s competition.

The First Back to Back Premiership

In 2019 South Adelaide became the first club to win back to back premierships in the SANFL Women’s competition.

The First Women’s League Best and Fairest Winners for Their Club

In 2017 Courtney Gum from Glenelg was the first winner of the Best and Fairest Award for the Women’s League competition. In 2018 Hannah Martin was the first West Adelaide Women’s League Best and Fairest. In 2019 the first Norwood Women’s League Best and Fairest was Najwa Allen.

The First Dual Best and Fairest Award Winners

In 2020 North Adelaide’s Anne Hatchard and West Adelaide’s Rachelle Martin shared the Award. Anne Hatchard became the first League Medal Best and Fairest winner for North Adelaide

The First League Women Season Top Goalkicker for each Club

In 2017 North Adelaide’s Chloe Scheer was the first women’s league top goalkicker. In 2020 Jess Kirk was South Adelaide’s first league top goalkicker with 10 goals. In 2021 Chantel Reynolds was the first season top goalkicker for Central District with 14 goals. In 2022 Alana Lishmund for Norwood kicked 18 goals to top the competition goalkickers.

Most Goals in a Season

In 2019 the record for most goals in a season in the SANFLW was achieved by Kelly Barltrop of North Adelaide with 26 goals.
