Notable events in South Australian Football History, from the formation of the South Australian Football Association in 1877.
The South Australian National Football League (SANFL) exhibition in the South Australian State Library “In a League of its Own” to celebrate 140 years of history, features a timeline. This timeline contains notable events in the 140 year history of the SANFL from its inception as the South Australian Football Association (SAFA) in 1877.
The proposed design for the background to the presentation of the timeline at the exhibition in the State Library is a football (see image above). The two main venues for the game provide an overlay pictorial backdrop. Adelaide Oval, which was the main venue until 1973 and Football Park (later Aami Stadium) became the home of the SANFL from 1974 until the return to Adelaide Oval in 2013.
The timeline itself features each premier club’s colours from 1877 to 2016. (These feature on the back cover of this publication.) The information contained is presented covering three categories of events in relation to the SAFA/SANFL. The central category is for events to do with the SAFA/SANFL itself. Significant events for the participating clubs and finally notable individual contributions and achievements are included.
A number of significant themes of events run within the three categories. For SAFA/SANFL all of the participating clubs over time are identified, as are the venues for matches and events about interstate matches. Club themes identify the first premiership for every club, changes made to clubs’ home grounds and dominant club eras. Individual themes are notable events in relation to Magarey Medallists, top goalkickers, coaches and administrators.
This publication provides all of the constructed material proposed for the final development of the timeline on display. Some of this material was not included in the display due to space and visual effect.
